Somers Park Primary School

Think. know. explain. do.

Welcome to Somers Park Nursery!

Nursery classes

There are two Nursery classes in our school, guided by a qualified teacher who over sees both the ‘Stars’ and ‘Rainbows’ rooms. Both rooms have a highly qualified and experienced team of staff. We aim to provide an environment in which the children develop self-esteem, in an atmosphere of mutual respect, whilst learning to appreciate and understand others. We encourage independence and promote an ethos of listening, sharing, concentration and pride in our achievements. In everything we do, we are developing the children’s speaking and listening skills and giving them the confidence to know how to seek help.

Stars room

In the Stars room, the children can start from 2 years 9 months. The children focus predominantly on the three prime area of learning: Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional and Physical Development. We promote a love for literacy and spend time enriching the children’s language and promoting their communication and listening skills. The stars room have their own changing unit and a small kitchen area to prepare snack. Between 2 years 9 months and 3 years old, the children will eat their lunch in the stars room in a quiet and calm space. Please click on the star tab for more information.

Rainbows room

In the Rainbows room, the children can start the year before they start school. The Rainbows room focuses on the three prime areas as well as incorporating the four specific areas to support the children to feel prepared for starting school. The children will learn through play and engage in practical activities to develop their learning and skills, with a large focus on literacy and encouraging a love for reading and books. Please click on the Rainbows tab for more information.

Meals

If the children attend breakfast club between 7.45 and 8.30am, they will receive a breakfast as part of their paid session. Breakfast includes a range of cereals, bagels, toast, yogurts and fruits.

All children will have a morning snack and an afternoon snack, provided by nursery. Each child will receive a piece of fruit each day and we provide breads/ crackers/ pastries/ dried fruits/ toast and vegetables.

The children will have lunch in the main school hall between 11.30am and 12.30pm each day. You can choose if your child would like to bring a packed lunch OR receive a hot lunch (which will be charged and added to your invoice each month). You can download a menu from the school website to get an idea of the meals that would be provided.

If your child is attending Nursery between 4pm and 6pm, we ask that you send them with a tea box/ light snack.

Curriculum

Both Nursery classes follow a yearly curriculum overview with a focus on learning around different topics and core texts. Each topic is designed to provide the children with a wide range of experiences and a balanced curriculum. Sometimes, the topics will change or be adapted, dependent on the children’s interests and next steps.

Activities and experiences are planned by a qualified teacher and the room leader, to enable the children to learn and develop effectively. In nursery, staff contribute to planning ideas and think about individual children’s next steps, with a predominant focus on the three prime areas. Where a child may have a special educational need or disability, staff consider whether specialist support is required, linking with relevant services from other agencies where appropriate. More information can be found on the application form.
